Dear Marketer:

The first year I was in the advertising business, I met with the new sales rep of an AOR (Album Oriented Rock) radio station. While we were meeting I noticed that she seemed to be distracted. 


"Is there something wrong?"
I asked. 

“Well I just found out this morning that I’ve lost my gas trade,” she said.

“Your gas trade,” I repeated.  “How does that work?” 


She went on to explain that one of her benefits from the station was that they allowed her to trade airtime for gasoline. 


“But why would the station owner make such a deal?”
I inquired.  After all the profit on a gallon of gas is less than five cents. 

“Because of the multiple,” she replied.  “I am able to offer 3 dollars in advertising time on the station for each dollar of gas.  It’s a great deal for me because we also most always have time that has not been sold.  And it’s a great deal for the gasoline station owner because he is able to advertise his station for a fraction of what it would normally cost.”


That night, I had visions of buying myself a gas station and making a fortune reselling my airtime credits to my advertising customers.  But by breakfast the next morning – I had developed a much better plan.


I called my friend at the station and told her that she had her gas trade back and this time it was an even better deal than before. 

“How so?” she inquired. 

“Because now you can get your gas anywhere you want.”

“But how is that possible?” she gasped. 

“Just get your gas on a credit card and bring the credit card bill to me at the end of the month.  I'll write you a check and you write me a credit for three times your purchase price.”


Two things happened that fateful day in 1977.  The first thing was that I was able to turn a total stranger into a best friend via barter.  The second thing was I turned a business that yielded 15% profits into a business that yielded 66% (whenever I was able to utilize barter).

In order to explain how this happened – let me explain how the advertising agency business operates.  Typically, I will place advertising for my client for which the station will allow a 15% commission. In other words, I am able to purchase a dollar's worth of advertising for a client for eighty-five cents.  Yielding a 15% profit to me.


But now, when I sold a client $1 in advertising, I was able to yield a profit of $0.66. Look at how the transaction works:

On the first dollar I make nothing.
On the second dollar I make $1.00
On the third dollar I make $1.00
So for every three dollars my client spends, I make $2.00 or 66%. 


Over time, this can mean an extraordinary amount of profit.  For example, for every $100,000 in advertising billing I went from making $15,000 to $66,000 – an increase of 440% for the same amount of effort. The power of barter strikes again!


Over the years, I have kept my bartering secrets pretty close to the vest.  But recently I decided that a secret of this magnitude really needs to be shared.  It was then that I decided to write this little e-book.
